2017 Acura ILX Review

The 2017 Acura ILX is a small luxury car that unfortunately doesn’t perform so well against rivals in its class. It has seating for 5 people and comes with a 201 horsepower engine with a FWD drivetrain.

The Acura ILX has had no major changes for the 2017 model year. This vehicle has a low base price and very good fuel economy. What tends to let it down is the average quality of the cabin materials and the rough ride quality. It also has infotainment features that tend to be more distracting than useful.

The 2017 Acura ILX scores poorly for performance and interior cabin quality but does well on safety features and price. In fact it’s one of the cheapest small luxury cars on the market with a starting price of under $30,000.

The 2017 Acura ILX comes with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower. It’s paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. According to EPA estimates the Acura ILX has fuel economy of 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

The 2.4-liter engine delivers decent enough power but reviewers are mixed as to whether the acceleration could be better or not. Some say it moves quickly off the line but others prefer the acceleration once you have reached higher revs. The gear changes are smooth and paddle shifters come as standard.

“Acura ILX has found the perfect partner in Acura’s 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. But what’s really remarkable about the whole thing is how utterly unremarkable it is. Leave it in Drive and go to the grocery store, and you’ll never notice a thing. Shift it into Sport and use the steering wheel-mounted paddles, and you’ll find a sport transmission that’s quick and crisp, but never jarring.” – Kelley Blue Brook.

Handling on the Acura ILX is decent but the ride can become rough once you start to hit bumps in the road. It has precise steering which helps with cornering. It’s nicely weighted and you’ll feel the connection with the road. The brakes respond quickly but there is more noise in the cabin than you would expect for a luxury car.

The Acura ILX has a low starting price but this is offset by the cheaper materials used inside the cabin. The appearance of the interior looks fairly plain compared to some of its rivals.

The front seats are comfortable and there’s ample room in the rear for most passengers. A moonroof comes as standard and this actually takes away some of the headroom for taller passengers.

The ILX comes with a 5-inch display screen as standard which only provides audio information. You can upgrade to a dual-screen which includes an 8-inch navigation display and 7-inch touch-screen. Having 2 display screens is a little awkward as you’ll have to shift your gaze from one to the other. The infotainment menus can be selected through the touch-screen or control knob.

The 2017 Acura ILX has a starting price of $27,990 which is cheaper than all other small luxury cars. It suffers from having a mediocre interior but this can be remedied by purchasing the Premium Package which includes leather seating, driver’s seat memory settings, smartphone navigation and the dual display screen and touch-screen. The Premium Package costs an additional $2,000.

The 2017 Acura ILX sits at the bottom of the luxury small car class due to it’s mediocre interior and performance. Some more expensive but higher quality alternatives include the 2017 Audi A4, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia and the 2017 BMW 2-Series.
