2016 BMW 4-Series
The 2016 BMW 4-Series is one of the best luxury small cars available with a good looking interior cabin, enough power for a small car and good handling. It seats four or five people and comes as either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and has two engines to choose from.
The 2016 BMW 4-Series has no major changes from previous years as BMW have continued production of their winning model. The 4-Series has decent cargo space for a small car and a powerful engine. It’s available in three trims, the Coupe, Gran Coupe and the Convertible.
One drawback of the 4-Series is the fairly complicated infotainment system which can be a little less than user-friendly. Some of BMW’s rivals do make this system a little easier to use but hopefully BMW will upgrade this in future years. In spite of the complicated infotainment system the BMW 4-Series is still one of the best in its class.
The BMW 4-Series performs well on the road with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can be upgraded to the turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. The available engines are the 420i, 430i and the 440i. All of them have a smooth ride, agile handling and good acceleration. Two transmissions are available, a six-speed manual and 8-speed automatic.
The EPA has given the base 2016 BMW 4-Series an estimated 23 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway. This is fairly standard for luxury small cars. In an Edmunds review critics had this to say about the 4-Series:
“To get an idea of what it’s like to drive the 2016 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, think of … things like strong brakes, precise steering and a suspension that makes the car nimble around turns, while still delivering a decent ride quality.”
It’s been described as having athletic performance and brakes that deliver strong breaking power even when put under pressure.
The BMW 4-Series comes in 3 trims. The convertible has a top that can be lowered or raised in under 20 seconds. You don’t even need to stop the vehicle as the hardtop can be lowered or raised while travelling at speeds of up to 11 mph.
The 4-Series has a good-looking interior with quality materials. The Gran Coupe has plenty of space for a small car with 45.9 cu. ft of cargo space. The Convertible and Coupe model seats four people while the Gran Coupe will seat five. The front seats have plenty of room while the rear seating is slightly restricted for space as the roofline slopes backwards reduce headroom for the rear passengers.
The 4-Series is comfortable for short rides. It features dual-zone climate control, infotainment system, nine speakers, bluetooth and a 6.5-inch display screen. The screen can be upgraded to the larger 8.8-inch display and touchpad control.
The BMW 4-Series has a starting price of $41,950 for the Gran Coupe. Upgrading to the convertible will add around an extra $8,350 for a base price of $50,300.
There are a few small luxury cars to consider, some of which perform equally well with the 2016 BMW 4-Series. the 2016 Audi A4 is a definite contender for best small luxury car. As is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Both of these are valid options to the 4-Series.
