The 2017 FIAT 500X is a subcompact SUV with seating for 5 people and engine choices up to 180 horsepower. It’s available as either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and has an upscale interior.

The infotainment system on all the FIAT models is noted for being easy-to-use. The SUV is maneuverable for its size but lacks the more powerful engine choices. Some standard features also seem to be lacking.

The FIAT 500X is priced from $19,995 and $27,050. The trims for this model year have been simplified. Reviewers have mixed views on the 500X but most agree it’s not likely to be a mainstream vehicle.


The 2017 FIAT 500X comes with either a 1.4-liter or 2.4-liter engine delivering either 160 HP or 180 HP. The 1.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine is front-wheel drive and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine can come as either front-wheel or all-wheel drive and is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy for the FIAT 500X is worse than expected. The base engine gets an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The bigger engine lowers that the 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

The 500X is best suited to city driving. While it is reasonably agile around tight corners the drive quality certainly isn’t thrilling. The 500X has a towing capacity of 1,000 lb. with the 2.4-liter as long as you also opt for all-wheel drive.



The FIAT 500X has seating for 5 people in two rows of seats. Cloth upholstery comes as standard but leather upholstery is available on higher trim levels. Both front and rear seats are comfortable with plenty of leg and head room.

The interior of the 500X looks much better than it’s price. The cabin is fitted out with materials that are soft and that have a pleasing texture. The cabin is made of solid material but the supporting pillars do limit the view out the sides of the vehicle. Higher trim levels come with FIAT’s Uconnect infotainment system and touch screen.


The 2017 FIAT 500X is priced between $19,995 and $27,050. The Pop trim level is the base model and it’s one of the most affordable SUVs in the subcompact SUV class. It lacks many standard features but at least you get air conditioning and remote keyless entry. The Trekking model has a starting price of $23,385 and comes with a 5-inch touch screen, satellite radio and Bluetooth.


The FIAT 500X ranks down the lower end of the list of subcompact SUVs. While it is fairly cheap it still lacks many standard features. Some other options to choose from are the 2017 Honda HR-V, the 2017 Mazda CX-3 or the 2017 Buick Encore.
