2017-subaru-wrx-reviewThe 2017 Subaru WRX is a powerful compact car with agile steering and all-wheel drive. It comes with either a 2.0 or 2.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes up to 305 horsepower. The WRX has a starting price of $26,695 with 5 WRX trims to choose from.

The 2017 WRX comes with a 6-speed manual transmsission as standard on all trims and all-wheel drive. The AWD gives the WRX extra traction around corners. There’s also plenty of additional safety features available. Acceleration is quick for both the turbocharged engines and handling is superb.

On the down side the WRX is still fairly noisy with plenty of wind and rose noise while you’re driving. The suspension is tuned quite aggressively which makes the ride rougher than most people would want. The interior quality, while good, is still below par for its class. New for the 2017 model of the WRX is reverse automatic braking available as an added option. All trims now have as standard automatic headlights and auto-up switches on front windows.

Specs

The 2017 Subaru WRX is quite zippy on the road so you’ll get good acceleration even with the smaller 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine makes 268 horsepower with 258 lb-ft. of torque. The larger 3.5 liter turbocharged engine makes 305 horsepower and has 290 lb-ft. of torque. The STI trims use a turbochager with intercooler.

All trims use the fully synchronized 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Paddle shifters are optional extras on the WRX Premium and WRX Limited. All trims feature a number of driving aids such as Active Torque Vectoring which applies braking power to the front wheels resulting in sharper turns and more neutral driving. They also come with Vehicle Dynamics Control and a Traction Control System.

As far as performance goes the Subaru WRX with the 2.0 liter engine can reach 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Using the CVT (Automatic) transmission makes it a little slower, reaching 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. This is quicker than some other rivals such as the Ford Focus ST which reaches 0-60 mph in about 6.4 seconds. Fuel economy for the WRX is 20 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. The WRX STI with bigger engine gets 17 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway.
