The 2018 Ford Expedition is about to get an overhaul with a new aluminum body. The current design of the Expetition has been virtually unchanged since 2007. Ford have figured it’s time for an overhaul. By changing the steel body with the aluminum one they’ll be able to reduce the weight of the Expedition by about 300 pounds.
The new Expedition will grow larger, both inside and out. Styling will be changed to give it a softer look as the older styling now seems to appear blocky. The softer styling will make it more easily identifiable from the Ford F-150 pickup which shares the same parts.
The 2018 Ford Expedition has a higher beltline, which means there’s less glass. The height overall has also been slightly reduced. The standard Expedition will be 4-inches longer and wider than previous versions. The roof between the rails has been raised to allow extra space for headroom. The end result is a more spacious interior and a lighter body.
It’s not just the Expedition’s body that’s being upgraded. The entire vehicle is being given an overhaul. The powertrain has been updated and there’s dozens of new technology features that will be included to make driving more comfortable.
The large SUV market grew by about 15% in 2016 with 621,277 vehicle sales in total. Ford are attempting to make the Expedition more competitive and hope the new model will dominate the market.
The Expedition was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show last Tuesday. The slimming down of the vehicle’s weight will provide better fuel economy althrough Ford are yet to reveal any specifics.
The Expedition will come with a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine that’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It will be available in 3 trim levels, XLT, Limited and Platinum. All trim levels are available in a MAX version which extends the length even further.
