2016 Toyota MiraiThe 2016 Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell car with an electric motor. It’s a mid-sized car that generates 151 hp and weighs 4,078 lbs. With this kind of car you’ll have fast acceleration at low speeds, a quiet operation and zero emissions.

Toyota are predicting hydrogen fuel cells will be the way of the future and the 2016 Mirai was the winner of the 2016 World Green Car award. In fact Mirai means future in Japanese.

So how does it actually work? The Mirai has hydrogen tanks located at the back of the vehicle. These tanks are reinforced to prevent any leakage. Air is taken in from the front intake grills and combined in the central fuel stack with the hydrogen to create electricity. When you press the accelerator the electricity from the fuel stack is sent to the electric motor to power the vehicle. All that remains after this chemical reaction takes place is water which is leaked out through the tailpipe.

The fuel cells are able to generate 151 hp and the Mirai has a top speed of 108 mph. You can reach 0-60 in about 9.4 seconds and you’ll get arou nd 67 mpg both in the city and on the highway. The Mirai has a range of around 300 miles and refueling the car takes around 5 minutes. Toyota are offering 3 years worth of free fuel to anyone who purchases the 2016 Mirai as bonus for being a trendsetter in the industry.

The hydrogen tanks in the Mirai have undergone extensive safety tests. They’re composed of three layers.¬†One to hold in the hydrogen, one of reinforced carbon-fiber to provide strength and an outer reinforced layer to protect the tank from surface abrasions. One of the downsides of this technology at the moment is that their are limited places to fill up. Hopefully this will change in the future. Toyota are providing free fuel to make the transition a little easier.

The 2016 Toyota Mirai has a luxurious interior that looks well-designed and comfortable. The controls are easy-to-use and highly visible although the instrument panel has been moved to the center of the dashboard which may seem a little strange at first.

The Mirai seats four people with decent headroom and legroom. There’s not as much cargo space as in a typical mid-sized car due to the hydrogen tanks which sit at the back of the vehicle. There’s still enough room for a few bags of shopping though.

Eight airbags are fitted to the Mirai to keep you safe in the event of collision. Hopefully that won’t happen with the Active Safety System and Pre-Collision System which detects obstacles ahead and assists with breaking to avoid any collisions.

The seats are all heated and provide lumbar support. Touch controls on the center dashboard give you easy access to climate control, music and the navigation system.

The 2016 Mirai comes in four unique colors and has a sleek design. This vehicle has a single trim and you can see the pictures below.
