The 2017 Toyota Tundra is a full-sized pickup truck with very good off-road capability. It comes as either 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and either a 4.6-liter or 5.7-liter V8 that delivers up to 381 horsepower.

The Tundra has seating for up to 6 people and the rear seats feel spacious and comfortable. The infotainment system is easy to use. There has been a slight price increase on all trim levels for the 2017 model.

The only available engines are the V8 engines. This means there’s no V6 or diesel engine options. For this reason fuel economy is quite bad for this class.

Performance

The 2017 Toyota Tundra comes with a choice of two V8 engines. The base engine is a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 310 horsepower. The upgraded engine is the 5.7-liter V8 that gets an additional 71 horsepower, bringing the total to 381 horsepower. Both engines have poor fuel economy but that’s pretty standard for this class.

The base V8 engine gets 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Rear wheel drive is standard on the Tundra but you can upgrade to the optional 4WD for better traction on and off the road. For the best off-road performance look at the TRD Pro trim that has been specifically designed for off-road driving.

Maneuvering the Tundra around the city streets or parking lots is difficult due to its large size. It does have sharp steering which makes it easier to handle. The brakes are good but can be a little touchy. The Toyota Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 10,500 pounds.

Interior

The 2017 Toyota Tundra has various cabin options. The regular Cab Tundra models have seating for three people. The Double Cab and CrewMax cabins have seating for either 5 or 6 people depending on whether you opt for the front bench, which comes as standard, or the bucket seats.

Cloth seating comes as standard and the front seats are comfortable and roomy. The rear seats also have ample space while the CrewMax cabin features reclining rear seats to make them even more comfortable.

The Tundra has a roomy and comfortable interior but it’s not elegant. It’s functional but has any real design changes in many years. It also still uses hard plastics for some surfaces. The Tundra comes with the Entune infotainment system with touch screen. There are control knobs if you prefer using the controls that way.

Price

The 2017 Toyota Tundra has a base price that’s a little higher than other large pickup trucks in the class. It has a starting price of $30,020. The second trim level is available with either a Double Cab or CrewMax cabin and start from $33,430. If you’re looking for optimal off-road power than look at the Tundra TRD Pro which has a staring price of $43,395.
